Munich day trip to Salzburg

We are travelling to Munich for the 1st time this weekend and we hope to do a day trip to Salzburg, we need advice on which day would be best to visit, Salzburg, Sunday or Monday, would most placesi n Salzburg be %26quot;closed%26quot; on the Sunday and would it be better to visit on the Monday.

Also when I go onto the http://www.mvv-muenchen.de website to check train times etc , it gives me 2 options for the destination station.

Salzburg (Forstinning) town/district or

Slazburgh (Steinhoring) town/district - which one do we choose? Which Station do we get off at?

Can we use the Regional Trains and purchase our return tickets from the tickets machines in the main station or do we have to use a Kiosk?

Finally on arriving at Salzburg station how do we find the %26quot;old town%26quot; is it an easy walk or do we need to take a bus?

Thanks for your help

Use the DB timetable. MVV is only for the greater Munich reagion.

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Munich

To: Salzburg

1. Freizeit-Ticket Munich - Salzburg and return. EUR 29,00 per person.

A one day return ticket. Covers also the faster far distance trains between Munich and Salzburg (IC/EC or Railjet).

Price is if you buy online or from ticket machines. At the counter the ticket is EUR 5,00 more expensive.

2. Bavaria Ticket. EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons.

A more restricted mini group day ticket. Covers only regional trains (select at the DB timetable as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;). But covers also the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses in Munich. The buses in Salzburg however not. This ticket is valid

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

Price is if you buy from ticket machines. At the counter the ticket is EUR 2,00 more expensive.

With this ticket Sunday would to be prefer as you can start earlier. Sights and tourist shops are open in Salzburg on Sundays. And if it comes to normal shopping Munich has more on offer and better prices.

You can walk from Salzburg Hbf (main train station) to the old city center.

Thanks for your very clear good advice.

Could you possibly suggest another %26quot;pretty%26quot; small town/city - closer than Salzburg that we could visit for the day from Munich (about 45 mins - 1 hr) journer using the regional trains.

Thank you

John

Augsburg is a lovely small city. It has a medieval history with some city walls, towers and gates (a little like york) and the Fuggerei. Also varous museums, doms etc. It%26#39;s about 40 mins away from Munich.

Besides Augsburg:

Landshut

landshut.de/uploads/media/Landshut_im_Ueberb…

45-60 minutes by regional trains

Regensburg

www.historicgermany.com/regensburg.html

90 minutes by regional trains

These cities are walkable. But as the Bavaria Ticket covers the buses and trams (exist in Augsburg only) in these cities, you can use them as well.

Try the lakes south of Munich. Starnberg/Ammersee etc. Maybe Ammersee with a visit to the Andechs monastery for a nice autumn walk and some serious monastic beers. All easily reachable by S-Bahn. A bit cold for swimming tho... :)
