will be traveling by train in April and want to spend 3-6 nights along the Rhine/Mosel valleys. should we try to numerous overnights in several places or pick one town as a base and just do daytrips?

I%26#39;d pick one. Koblenz is the train hub for both rivers and easiest for daytrips if you stay near the station; a good place if you want to be in a good-sized city. Cochem is my favorite town of the four and makes for a good base too; I%26#39;ve used it myself on numerous occasions. But it%26#39;s quiet in April, not much to do in the evenings, and you%26#39;ll need to change trains in Koblenz for Rhine journeys - not a major deal and worth it if you want a smaller more scenic and atmospheric place to stay. It%26#39;s very close to Burg Eltz, not far at all by train from Trier.

For the Moselle and Middle Rhine Valleys choose Cochem or Koblenz.
If you want to visit Cologne I would recommend to stay there before of afterwards.
