Munich or Frankfurt for first time visitors to Germany?

Hello everyone. We are a family of four planning to visit Germany for the first time this December 2009. We might not be able to visit for a very long time , so if we had a choice, which city should we go to? Are there tour buses, trains, or any affordable public transportation that will allow us to visit Austria and Prague?

Which areas in Munich should be the most central and ideal to stay at? Finding a hotel is always the hardest given all the addresses that we do not have a clue for. I hope someone can help us so we can start the planning process. We will be flying from Asia. Thank you.

Much as I love Frankfurt, I do think most people would pick Munich first. It has close proximity to the Alps and to Austria and has those real famous castles near-by. Big Christmas market to visit too. Now if you had asked to pick between Berlin and Munich, I would pick Berlin.

Using the Bavaria Laender tickets, it is very cheap and reasonable to visit Salzburg from Munich. A group of up to 5 people can travel there with just one ticket that costs 28 euro.

Have you already searched the forum for good ideas of places to stay in Munich and things to do?

Thank you very much. The family just thought of the possibility of spending the holidays in Germany this December but we would like to get feedbacks as to where to go before we start scouting for affordable plane fares. The dates that we are looking for are Dec 20-Jan 1. We are starting to read the topics in TA to get an idea of what to see and do in Germany.

Can anyone give a suggestion of areas to stay in or serviced apartments which might come out cheaper for 4 people.

Is it also necessary to arrange for tours to see castles and all , or can we do it on our own?

We would appreciate any advise given. Thank you.

Do find a nice sort of resort type place, perhaps in Garmisch or Salzburg for the Christmas holiday. Everything pretty much shuts down on the 24th around 2 pm. Otherwise, you will find yourself with no place to eat the evening of the 24th and nothing to do.

The 25th and 26th are official holidays, so check the websites for any of the attractions you want to visit for those days. They will have posted whether or not they are open on those days. Stores are closed on Sundays, and most museums are closed on Mondays in Germany just for a bit more info.

Getting to Prague from either place involves a long train journey - if you want somewhere that is closer to Prague, then think about Dresden.

If you have any US govt affiliation you might consider the Eidelweiss resort in Garmisch as well. It has lots of family activities.

Thank you very much. But are the planes to Prague or Austria reasonably priced in December?

Thank you too for telling us about the Eidelweiss rsort? is that open to the public and how accessible is that place from Munich?
