If you had one week

which would you choose, Dresden or Nuremberg? I have never been to either, trying to plan my next year travel. Any advice would be appreciated.

One week is enough time for both, IMO.

Nuremberg makes a good base for day trips to Regensburg, Munich, and more so perhaps 4 nights there and 3 in Dresden would work.

I would choose Nurnburg. With trips to Regensburg, Passau, Munich, Keilheim and the Kloster Weltenburg with lots of other great sites in the area.

I would pick Dresden with day trips to Görlitz, Bautzen, Meissen, Freiberg and the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), Zittau and the Zittau mountains, the National Park Saxon Switzerland, Prague, Berlin, Wroclaw ... oh, and you should spend two or three days in Dresden itself.

LOL, just saying that you can choose either and each will be good for more than one week.

You are right, a week isn%26#39;t enough time, but I would like to squeeze in that day trip to Meissen (to buy some porcelain of course)

A week in Dresden is fine to do the city and its surroundings justice. There is so much in the city and so much more in the surroundings. In fact, I am planning my 6th trip to Dresden and Saxony right now, of the past five trips the shortest was 4 days and the longest was 10 days, I am already stressing how to fit all those things in that I want to see and do and there will still be a long wish list left for trips 7 and 8.

A week in Franconia is also great to have. There is, again, so much to see and do. Nürnberg is a good base tor each other towns on day trips.

Tough decision. These two are my favourite travel regions in Germany. But I would not squeeze both into a one week trip. Select one, and visit the other the following year.

Sorry, I hit enter too soon, I meant to say I hadn%26#39;t thought of Franconia as a base for these other day trips. I think maybe I will try to extend my trip to 10 days, and that way have five days in each. Not enough, I know, but as you said, there is always next year.
