I%26#39;ve only been to Hamburg the once, so am by no means the expert, however I can recommend the hotel and area we stayed in - the Wagner am Dammtorpalais. Dammtor area is very quiet, safe, has reasonably inexpensive hotels (by Hamburg standards) and a pleasant walk to the lake and old city centre/town hall area. About 20 minute stroll to the town hall I guess.
The Wagner hotel is one of 4 located in an old mansion block and cost us around 90 Euro per night, room only - it was difficult to find much for less than that, unless one stayed in a seedier area of town. It was affordable and comfortable albeit slightly eccentric in decor, with very helpful owners/staff; I%26#39;d stay there again if returning to Hamburg.

As mentioned, Hamburg city centre is expensive for hotels, so 90 euros is not a lot to pay. The good thing is that Hamburg%26#39;s transport system is really good and easy to use so you might want to stay a little outside the centre and use the S-Bahn, U-Bahn or even buses to get to the markets.

Mat

My wife and i have been going to the hamburg markets for the last 6 years and have just booked to go back on the 19th December for 3 nights. we got a great deal through the hamburg tourism website at the Park Hyatt, a fantastic hotel which we have stayed at for the last 4 years, this hotel is strolling distance to 4 surrounding markets.. Prior to that we have used the Marriot good rates and nice hotel and the intercontintal , which is a bit out of the center.
