I%26#39;m trying to select between several apartments. Almost finished! Can anyone comment on the best location between these alternatives. We%26#39;d like a location suitable for a family. We want a very central location with restaurants and grocery available nearby. Here are our choices:
1. Near Brandenburg Gate (200 meters) and Potsdamer Platz ( U2 -Mohrenstrasse) Near Hotel Adion)
2. Between Brandenburg Gate (300 meters) and Potsdamer Platz ( U2 -Mohrenstrasse is just in front of building). Balcony view to Potsdamer Platz.
3. Nikolai Quarter - 200 meters from Alexanderplatz (U Bahn - Alexanderplatz)
4. Near Gendarmenmark (100 meters) and Friedrichstrasse (50 meters) (U Bahn - Alexanderplatz)
I would appreciate any help - first time to Berlin! Next I will be looking for suggestions on tours/guides!
Thanks!

All of them are in great locations (at least on paper). I would choose by price/amenities.

The last one can%26#39;t have U-Bahn Alexanderplatz as nearest if it%26#39;s really so near to Friedrichstrasse and Gendarmenmarkt!
Not sure how old the kids are (as you say %26quot;family%26quot;) but these central locations are to my mind more for business district/ cultural institutions than family living. No playgrounds or parks around for example, and few neighbourhood shops (Nikolaiviertel is a mix of souvenir shops and other gift boutiques for example). Supermarket in Rathauspassagen I think, also in Galeria Kaufhof (or in Potsdamer Platz Arkaden) and probably others dotted around but they don%26#39;t leap at you as you sightsee.
For neighbourhood restaurants, grocery etc , plus playgrounds/parks you%26#39;d be better in somewhere like Prenzlauer Berg which has a lot more charm to wander round too, with wide, tree-lined streets and many 19th century buildings. The city centre was so badly damaged in the war there are far more new buildings than old, apart from the restored major monumental buildings.
One alternative that is still central for sightseeing but with a neighbourhood feel would be the area above Oranienburger Strasse. We once rented in Novalisstrasse through 123berlinzimmer.de and that was an excellent location for sights plus local shops. However for charm I%26#39;d still suggest Mitte/Prenzlauer Berg border. To get to the centre: U-Bahn eg from Senefelder Platz or Eberswalder Strasse or trams down Kastanienallee.

Thank for the suggestions - our girls are 11 and 13 so we no longer need the parks and playgrounds. Most important to us is restaurants, delis, groceries and proximity to sites that we will be visiting. For example, in Jerusalem, we stayed in a great neighborhood but the walk to the bus, grocery and restaurants was at least 15 minutes. It became quite a hassle.
We%26#39;d like to be in an area of convenience and charm- - rather than a business district or distant neighborhood. Sounds like they are all safe enough neighborhoods.
I just double checked - -I suspect the last one may not be near Alexanderplatz. Perhaps that was a %26quot;cut and paste%26quot; error by the owner.

The Apartments at Brandenburg Gate are right across the street from the back entrance of the Aldon. Great location and great price. There is a bus stop right on the corner and the U and S are within easy waking distance, as is the supermarket.

No doubt those location are really central but don%26#39;t give you the feel of a Berlin Kiez (neighbourhood). Even if your kids don%26#39;t need swings and slides I thinkl the small parks and squares with grass and trees are a nice part of the landscape; that%26#39;s really what I was getting at.
Schoenhouse apartments are also still fairly central but you have Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood to explore in the other direction with its wide tree-lined streets, restaurants, delis, %26quot;bio%26quot;-shops etc. And loads of German families (though mainly with smaller kids, there%26#39;s a real baby boom in P%26#39;Berg)!.
