Hi everyone!
We%26#39;re going to be in the southern Black Forest for three nights in the week between Christmas and New Year - and are undecided where to stay: Titisee or Schluchsee. Seen many comments that Titisee is over-touristy, but also worry that Schluchsee may be too small and dead. Not sure what we%26#39;re likely to find in the last week of the year: lots of tourists or none at all. Any ideas?

Both places are very close to each other so you can always opt for accommodation that suits your fancy/budget and flit between each place. There are regular trains and buses as well as a short drive but prone to snow. I personally liked Schluschsee as I thought it was a little less sentimental then Titisee but both are simply beautiful.

Titsee is very small. You can see everything there is to see in a couple of hours. In December, the lake will be frozen and the boats won%26#39;t be running. Hiking in the cold weather would be a chore.
Stay in Freiburg and take daytrips to the two lakes. If you take the train from Freiburg to Titisee, sit on the right hand side in the direction of travel for the most scenic views.

I%26#39;d choose Titisee in this case. There shouldn%26#39;t be that many tourists now in winter and in case of bad weather you have better options from Titisee (as everything is half an hour closer) as from Schluchsee.
The %26quot;bus hordes%26quot; that invade Titisee during summer time are not there between Christmas and New Year. You will mostly meet Central European tourists who spend there winter vacation there and hope for snow.
The Schluchsee can look quite depressing in winter when weather is bad and everything grey.

Many thanks for all this - I think we%26#39;re leaning towards Titisee, but just a quick follow-up question about Freiburg: How big is this place? How would it compare to Fussen for example - bigger or smaller? I live in a city and want to escape from the concrete a bit.

Freiburg: 219,665 inhabitants.
Füssen: 14,236 inhabitants.

Hola Gringo :)
Welcome to foresta nera.
Freiburg has about 200,000 inhabitants and is therefore much bigger than Füssen. You go to Füssen because of Neuschwanstein, but Freiburg is %26quot;whole medieval town%26quot;.
I never was in Madrid but believe me, Freiburg would almost certainly feel like a village for you. Most of the historical center is without cars and rather quiet. Of course Titisee, Schluchsee and Füssen will be even more quiet.
Someone said that Freiburg would be a better choise to stay. Keep in mind that Freiburg often has fog in winter, while locations like Titisee and Schluchsee have perfectly blue skies. So I%26#39;d rather stay in Titisee (Schluchsee) and take a day trip to Freiburg by train (KONUS ticket you get for free when you register in your hotel).
Greetings from someone who commutes every day from near Titisee/Schluchsee to Freiburg

Hi Loeffle and team -
Last question and I%26#39;ll let you all go - Do you think we need to book a place to stay, or at this time of the year everywhere will have vacancies and we%26#39;ll be able to find somewhere once we%26#39;re there? A quick search seems to show that some hotels are actually closed during this week - so the problem may be finding somewhere that%26#39;s open!

Hi!
Depends if you want hotel or bed %26amp; breakfast?
Bed %26amp; breakfast can be booked through http://www.titisee.de
for hotels I recommend a booking engine.
I%26#39;d book in advance in any case.
Good luck!
