Trying to avoid Oktoberfest...

My husband and I are planning a trip to Munich next year and were considering traveling during the beginning of September, but are afraid we would be subject to increased lodging prices and larger amounts of tourists. Are we right to be concerned, or does the Oktoberfest madness (including higher prices) happen more toward the 18th?

Thanks!

Don%26#39;t like %26quot;madness%26quot;! But beginning of September will be free of Oktoberfest.

May be more tourists than usual, as many think the weather is good then.

Don%26#39;t get me wrong - we love madness! But for this trip we%26#39;re wanting something more low-key. ;-)

Tourists going there for Oktoberfest won%26#39;t arrive in big numbers before 17. Sep. 2010 in Munich.

Early September is still high season for %26quot;normal%26quot; tourists. This will effect cheap lodging in first place (hostels, campsites). The bulk of the hotel guest are however business travelers (for trade fairs, conferences, meetings ...). But early September there are still school holidays in Bavaria and thus nearly no such events taking place at all.

As soon your plans are more or less fix you could already book accommodation now. This is no risk with a service like

http://www.hrs.com

where you can cancel your booking in most cases on short notice (e.g. till 6pm on the arrival date). You also have to pay only when checking out.

Travelling to Munchen within the first 14 days of Sept. - never a problem.. You should get %26quot;regular%26quot; rates, and find plenty of rooms to choose from, etc.

Believe it or not, Munich is big enough that depending on where you are and what you do, you can actually BE in the city and almost not know that Oktoberfest is even going on.

The first time we ever went we had difficulty even FINDING that area where the carnival rides, giant ferris wheel, etc., were even LOCATED. We went to the Marienplatz at one point in the eveneing and the place was practically deserted.

it isn%26#39;t as if there is revelry and merry-making on every corner and for those who say there IS it is probably because they made sure they were constantly in the middle of it (not a bad thing but it is obviously a matter of perspective).

The question is, WHERE are you going to STAY????

Early September is no problem. But do start booking now for more choice. Americans a-plenty in Munich during the summer and since TA is an American based/biased resource all the top picks will be of interest to eveyone else in your position. Plenty of madness in the usual tourist hotspots such as HBHaus etc. Have fun.
