Train Ticket Options

We are a party of 4 and will be in the Munich area for 4 days and are looking for best ticket options. Our current plans are:

- U Bahn trips within Munich for Christmas Markets and to train station for Salzburg %26amp; Nuremburg trips

- Roundtrip (Day trip) to Salzburg

- S 5 roundtrip from Munich to Herrsching Central Station to visit Andechs Monastery

- One way trip to Nuremburg to catch a river cruise

Thank you.

While not an expert on Germany/Munich, I have studied the ticket situation and would offer the following advice:

(1) By far the greatest deal is the Bayern Ticket which provides TWO people travel on all regional and other (but not high speed trains) plus all local transporttion (bus, tram, S Bahn, U Bahn) for a full day at the incredible price of 28 Euros.

(2) The only downside of the Bayern ticket is that on weekdays, you cannot travel on trains before 9 AM (although you can buy a separate ticket to first destination you reach after 9 AM). However, on weekends, you can travel at any time.

(3) Thus, if your trip from Munich to Salzberg was on A Saturday or Sunday you could do it plust local transportation in Muncich (and I think Salzberg) for a total of 28 Euros for two.

(4) So, too, if you travel on weekend or after 9 AM on weeekday to Nurnberg, the price for two would likewise be 28 Euros.

Based on all I have researched, the Bayern ticket is by far the greatest bargain in the entire Bavarian train system. Go to the Duetsched Bahn website for more information.

By the way, I am not sure when your cruise leaves from Nurnberg but try to give yourself some time to explore either the old city, the Deutsches Museum, or the Nazi Documentation Center.

Have fun.

Actually, it%26#39;s even better. The bayern ticket can be used by 2 to 5 people travelling as one group. So, your trip to Salzburg will cost 28 euro for the entire group. Also, inside Munich you can use the partner day ticket that allows up to five people to travel on u-bahn, s-bahn, tram, bus. There are 3 zones and one ticket for the white zone (innenraum) costs 9euro. For all zones (but you only need this one if you go to the airport) the ticket costs 18 euro.

Bottom line, transport is cheap and effective.

For more details, see mvv.de site for munich transport and deutsche bahn site for train around germany.

2 of us are traveling thru Germany, Austria, to Budapest and Prague-we have the euro rail ticket that entitles us to 5 country travel for 15 days. Does this include ALL trains-fast and normal?

|||

%26gt;Does this include ALL trains-fast and normal?

All day trains.

For night trains you have to pay accomodation surcharge if you want a couchette or sleeper compartment.

One more question as to Bayern ticket. If we are going from Munich Airport to Salzburg, staying two nights and then returning to Munich HB - could we buy two Bayern day tickets? In other words, can you originate in Salzburg?

Thanks! (We too are going for Christmas markets.)

Yes.

Thanks Abalada

This is very helpful, not to mention cost-effective!
