My father in law was born in Dresden but had to leave due to the outbrake of the second world war. He was a very small child when they left and has no recollection of the street where he was born and since all family members have since died he has no access to information.
does anyone know where i can get pre war maps of Dresden or any other information ie. web site links etc.
He will be 70 next year and we plan to visit Dresden as part of a tour of Germany.
Any info will be much appreciated.

The maps are however only for central Dresden. If he lived outside the central districts the street and maybe even the houses may still be there. However a number of streets had been renamed for political reasons.

Some good links on:
http://www3.adnc.com/~lynnd/gfaq.html
www.dresden.de/de/02/or/anliegen/c_152.php
or google %26amp; then translate, the key word in German is probably:
Standesamt dresden de
or you could try Email: standesamt@dresden.de
Perhaps somebody from this office may respond...
Good Luck.. Also, in US, the Salvation Army does some research for you @ small fee...or used to...
