Melia or Hilton

Hello

I am travelling to Berlin after Chrismas and have previously posted with regard to hotels. I had been tossing up between the Hilton and the Regent - Regent obviously wins out for luxury and location.

I have now come accross the Melia and can get an executive room with breakfast for about €400 less that the Regent - not sure I can justify paying for the Regent luxury when we will only be staying for 4 days and using the hotel as a base while sightseeing.

Melia gets great reviews and executive rooms look nice. Location also seems good. How does Melia compare with the Hilton for location, surrounding bars and restaurants etc. Melia is about €200 less for an executive room than a ordinary room in the Hilton

Any help greatly appreciated

I am a big fan of Melia Hotels and find they offer a great value. We booked at Melia Berlin for our trip next month due to reviews and excellent location in Mitte. We prefer to walk to restaurants and also to have a bit of nightlife around and this hotel is perfect for that. It is also located across from a metro stop, important for getting around this huge city.

There is a reason that is is #4 on TA. For the rates, it is a great value and I would rather spend my money on enjoying Berlin that paying more for the hotel. I previously stayed twice at the Westin and it is a very nice hotel but I prefer the location of the Melia.

Family and friends have stayed at the Meliá and other friends at the Hilton (because they got a great deal); everyone has been very satisfied. Location is central in both cases so many sights walkable from both but meliá has the edge in that Friedrchstrasse station has S-Bahn lines running north-south and east-west as well as regional trains and U-Bahn. So getting to farther flung places like potsdam. Olympic stadium etc is easier from Friedrichstrasse. You also have trams passing the door going up to Prenzlauer Berg.

i%26#39;d say for such a huge price-saving the Meliá wins. plenty of restaurants around with Oranianburger Strasse and Hackescher markt an easy stroll and other restaurants even nearer.

You KNOW about the various interruptions to Berlin%26#39;s transport system, right?

Thanks for the all the replies - have been reading about the transport system problems with the S Bahn. Does not look likely to be fixed anytime soon.

Would this make the Melia less attractive to stay in?

Stayed at the Melia in August and had no transportation issues. It is right across from the train station, right on a tram stop that gets you to P%26#39;berg and H. Mkt. in minutes. My 11 year old and I had NO problems hopping some form of transport to anywhere. There are nice bars and restaurants nearby or a short walk (best ice cream we found in the city is a block away) but not TOO busy around to be annoying and too touristy.

I would save the money and choose the Melia.

S-Bahn on north-south route has been less affected throughout, and trains are now running again on the cross-city S-Bahn lines, just not out as far as Spandau or Schönefeld airport (as of last week, not sure absolute latest).

In any case the regional trains have always been running on the tracks parallel to the S-Bahn, so friedrichstrasse station has been open throughout (unlike Hackescher Markt, for example).
