Is it possible to get a ferry from St Goar to Mainz. We are a family of 5 (young children). If it can be done, how long approximately and can we get off and on at stops along the way ?

Depends when. Since 26. Oct. the winter timetable applies. No boats to Mainz with the winter timetable. There is only one daily boat from St. Goar to Bingen/Rüdesheim. This is however also the most scenic part of the Middle Rhine Valley.

With a single boat per day this makes no sense.
During high season in summer this is of course possible.
You can do however any train+boat combination you like. All places where the boats stop have also a train station. And e.g. between St. Goar and St. Goarshausen or between Bingen and Rüdesheim you have ferries to cross the river which run all year.

I%26#39;d limit the boat ride to two hours max, especially with kids, especially if it%26#39;s cold. Bingen to St. Goar is about right. It takes you about 30 minutes longer if you travel this stretch from north to south.
Be aware that a train ride to Braubach (betwen St. Goarshausen and Koblenz on the east bank) takes you to Marksburg Castle - the only one open year-round for tours in this area, and a great experience:
