Hi there, my wife and I are heading to Munich for the first time for a 3-4 night break around the middle of December (around 8/9th until the 12th/13th). Mostly we will just be visiting some sights and soaking up the Christmas atmosphere at the markets etc.
My questions is regarding weekends. We first planned to leave on the Sunday 13th/Monday 14th...but now a deal has opened up whereby we would have to return on the Saturday morning. Will we miss the opportunity to do anything by leaving before the weekend? Often we have found visiting citied that much of the %26quot;good stuff%26quot; happens on weekends.
Any advice on activities would also be very much appreciated. I am interested in all things foodie (I understand the Viktualienmarkt is open every day?). Also anything musically orientated (I had desperately hoped to see the Munich Bach Choir on the Sunday, but would have to forgo this)...anything similar I could catch?
Very many thanks!

The Saturdays in Advent are a) the main shopping days for the inhabitants of the city and surroundings and b) the days when busloads of day trippers come into the city. Both the shopping streets and the Christmas markets will be packed with crowds and not very enjoyable.

The Viktualienmarkt is foodie heaven - we visited twice last year on our December trip and plan to do so again this year.
I know you have a short time in Munich but we loved our day trip to Garmisch - it was really charming and the market small and festive. this year we will visit Mittenwald - we love he Bavarian village ambiance!
You might check out Limoni Restaurant in Schwabing as we had a delightful dinner there last year and plan to return.

Thanks both for your quick replies - really helpful in planning our trip. Think we will come home on the Sat morning, and may also take a trip to one of the smaller outlying villages to sample the atmosphere there!
Thanks again!

I have to say I haven%26#39;t done the markets in Munich but I have done them twice in Cologne and once each in Dusseldorf and Krakow and the weekends were much busier than midweek. You don%26#39;t have much comfort walking around them and it can be hard to see the stalls etc.. at the weekend.
