I hope someone can fill in my planning details. We are flying into Frankfurt, and plan to take the train to Rudesheim so we can sleep there and catch the morning K-D boat downriver.
We want to stop in Bacharach (maybe), St, Goar (for sure) and end up in Boppard for the night.
(1) The boat timings on K-D work out OK, but how do I ensure that the boat we plan to take won%26#39;t be full? Can I book a section at a time?
(2) I see that a German Rail ticket gives me 20% off the boat ticket; how do I get that if I am booking in advance?
(3) We will take the train from Boppard to Koblenz, then a loop down to Moselkern and back, then to Koln and later to Amsterdam.
Is there a best-choice railpass? After Amsterdam we will go by train to Bruges, Brussels and Paris - so that%26#39;s Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and France over a ten-day period.

You don%26#39;t. You just take the boat you want to take.
%26gt;Can I book a section at a time?
You can%26#39;t %26quot;book%26quot; anything on that route.
%26gt;(2) I see that a German Rail ticket gives me 20% off the boat ticket; how do I get that if I am booking in advance?
See above. You buy your ticket at the landing stage.

I doubt a rail pass makes sense for you. Buy a normal ticket FRA-Amsterdam, a normal ticket Amsterdam-Brügge, Brügge-Brussels and (as early as possible to save money) a Thalys ticket Brussels-Paris.
Thalys tickets are cheaper if bought in advance for a fixed train connection (like plane tickets). The rest allows you all the flexibility you need.

1) This is capacity management by (boat) size. And it works.
You cannot reserve at all.
2) All valid train tickets do. However if you start in Rüdesheim and end in Boppard you can only buy there the tickets for Boppard to Koblenz (EUR 4,85 per person).
3)
Frankfurt Airport - Rüdesheim
RMV single ticket EUR 6,95 per person
Koblenz - Moselkern - Koblenz
VRM mini group day ticket: EUR 20,00
Koblenz - Köln - Amsterdam
As I assume you won%26#39;t stay for more then 48 hours in Cologne:
Buy in advance a discounted special through the DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Koblenz
To: Amsterdam
Via: Koeln (and give the duration of the planned stopover)
You can buy at earliest 89 days in advance. The specials start from EUR 29,00. These specials are only valid for the booked connection. No change. No refund.
Amsterdam - Bruges, Bruges - Brussels
Buy normal p2p tickets on spot.
Brussels - Paris
Book in advance through
http://www.thalys.com

Thank you to both of the posters who have replied already. This is even better information than I was hoping for (and with TripAdvisor one can hope for a lot!)

One thing isn%26#39;t quite clear:
I said %26quot;%26gt; I see that a German Rail ticket gives me 20% off the boat ticket; how do I get that if I am booking in advance?%26quot;
You replied: %26quot;All valid train tickets do. However if you start in Rüdesheim and end in Boppard you can only buy there the tickets for Boppard to Koblenz (EUR 4,85 per person)%26quot;
So the just-used ticket that got us to Rudesehim wouldn%26#39;t work?
By then I hope to have advance-bought my Koblenz-Koln-Amsterdam ticket as you suggested; would that get me the K-D discount?

%26gt; So the just-used ticket that got us to Rudesehim wouldn%26#39;t work?
I thought you want to stay overnight in Rüdesheim. Thus the ticket is no more valid. Not sure if this rule applies anyway for RMV local public transport tickets. Guess only for *real* train tickets (DB tariff).
%26gt; By then I hope to have advance-bought my Koblenz-Koln-Amsterdam ticket as you suggested; would that get me the K-D discount?
No.
%26quot;Valid%26quot; means that you have a train ticket valid on this day to Rüdesheim or from Boppard.

If I were you I%26#39;d spend an extra night in Rudesheim, as it has beautyful atmosphere and surrounding. You can take a grand tour by cable lifts and visit neigbouring villages, then take the boat back.
