Looking for a day trip from Munich in early December (already doing Salzburg) and were wondering which of the following would be recommended.
- Andechs Monastery
- Augsburg

I would recommend Andechs... its an easy SBahn trip to Herrsching... on an autumn day its quite relaxing and nice to wander around the lake... and its a short walk through the forest to get to the monastery... enjoy the local brews, then take a bus back to Herrsching... Theres a nice butchers shop near the S Bahn station where you can ask to have breadrolls made with meats of your choice (belegte semmel)... Augsburg I dont find very inspiring...

Andechs is a very good day trip.
Do it my way.
Get of the S-bahn at Hersching, estimate in what direction the monestary
is situated and go in that direction.
You will earn some 2hr if you keep to the marked trail.
Up at the monastery you will find no monks, but instead a very crowded place serving beers McDonalds style.
But the beer is not Carlsberg style.

Andechs would only be suitable if the weather is good.
Have a second choice available and researched in case the weather is poor.
Augsburg is a medium sized town and has a very nice central shopping district. For many years, I stayed in Augsburg instead of Munich when I travelled to Germany in September%26#39;s past. It was inexpensive compared to the Oktoberfest prices at Munich hotels.
Augsburg is a good homebase for daytrips in the region. Ulm, Stuttgart, Fussen and even Lindau are easy trips by rail.
