1 month in Berlin or Edinburgh

Hello - I am planning to be in one of the two cities for a month (partly to learn a foreign language and the other part to explore and enjoy my holiday.) I have been to Europe before, including Western Germany, and was wondering which of the two cities would you recommend me choosing, if you had to pick. I do plan on tacking on an additional week or two in England to sight-see and visit friends. I love culture, dining out, architecture, doing photography, and international travel. Please post a response if you%26#39;ve been to both cities and have an opinion or suggestion. Thank you.

%26gt; partly to learn a foreign language

Scottish English, Scottish Gaelic or German?

Both cities are not playing in the same league. You could compare Berlin with London or New York. But not with Edinburgh.

clarification - for edinburgh, i wouldn%26#39;t be learning either of those languages. i%26#39;m intrigued by scotland as i%26#39;ve never been there before. i already live in a major city and like the quaint factor of a smaller town. though i wonder if i%26#39;d grow tire of it after a month...

Edinburgh is a nice small city but if I had a month I%26#39;d definitely go for Berlin. Loads of cultural, historical, entertainment activities to keep you busy. Plus Dresden, Leipzig, Hamburg, even Poland are not far on the train. The Scottish landscape is more varied and attractive than what you%26#39;d see in the Berlin area, but it sounds like with your interests the German capital would be a better choice.

Well, I think that Edinburgh is not a small town either.

There is certainly a lot to do in Berlin, even in a month, but I have no idea about Edinburgh.

In the summer, there%26#39;s Edinburgh Festival, which means over priced hotels.

Edinburgh is beautiful but in itself doesn%26#39;t offer you anything like as much to do as Berlin does, as Abalada has already pointed out.

You don%26#39;t mention history amongst your interests and that of course is where Berlin is a heavyweight too; architecturally too it is very interesting.

Berlin is also surprisingly quiet for a major city without heavy traffic, with plenty of parks and open spaces, even lakes andwoodlands in the city limits.

Unless you are used to the cold, in either case, I%26#39;d suggest this month be in the summer!

Ive lived in both places and love them both, but Berlin has more to offer. Bear in mind it was split into two for many years, you are getting two cities for the price of one in a way. I prefer the nightlife and shopping of Edinburgh but prefer Berlin%26#39;s varied history and cafe culture. In some ways they are similar, v international and multicultural.
