I find myself going to Metzingen for a couple of nights at the beginning of December - any recommendations for sights/shops/stopovers would be greatly appreciated!

Besides the paces mentioned above, Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de has a lot of things to see and do, including one of Europe%26quot;s largest, most visited, oldest and most beautiful Christmas Markets ( www.stuttgarter-weihnachtsmarkt.de ). Esslingen ( www.esslingen.de ) has an excellent well preserved medieval old town, and also the Esslingen Medieval %26amp; Christmas Market. Metzingen ( www.metzingen.de ) has Germany%26#39;s most factory outlets and is home to Hugo Boss for some inexpensive shopping. Well-preserved medieval Bebenhausen Monastery is also an excellent place to visit, as is Hohenneuffen Castle (fortress) ruins (both places in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de ), the largest castle ruins of the Swabian Alb ( www.schwaebischealb.de ), the region of Germay just to the SE of Metzingen..

I think 2 nights may not be long enough!..

We%26#39;re flying into Memmingen. Is hire-car the best (only) way to get to Metzingen from there? Many thanks for advice!
|||
Car is the fastest, but not the only way to get to Metzingen.
DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Allgaeu Airport
From: Memmingen
To: Metzingen(Wuertt)
also the cheapest way if you select as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;. Than you can use the Baden-Württemberg Ticket. EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons.
bahn.de/regional/view/mdb/pv/deutschlanderle…
Baden-Württemberg Ticket covers all regional trains in the state Baden-Württemberg. And a bit beyond, e.g. to/from Memmingen which is in Bavaria.
Baden-Württemberg Ticket covers not the buses from Memmingen Airport to Memmingen station. The buses in and around Memmingen are however covered.

If you do drive, driving will facilitate visiting Hohenzollern and Hohenneuffen Castes which are difficult to visit without a car as are many other places on the Swabian Alb. Driving the short way will take you through Upper Swabia ( www.oberschwaben-tourismus.de only in German) which has Germany%26quot;s highest concentration of beautiful Baroque churches and monasteries and is home to the Baroque Road ( www.barockstrasse.org only in German) and possibe visits to Ochsenhausen Monastery, Biberach an der Riss, and the lovely church at Zwiefalten Monastery.

Thank you so much abalada and marcopolko for all your advice. I%26#39;m going to Metzingen for a birthday party - I was there as a child nearly 40 years ago, and it looks as if I will hardly recognise it! However, the Hotel Schwanen is still there...
