Good Hotel near centre of Munich

First visit to Munich to celebrate wedding anniversary at the end of February 2010. Grateful for advice on which is easiest hotel to reach from airport. Is the S-bahn better/quicker than the Airbus?

All any advice most welcome and will be gratefully received.

Thank you

The best location is in the historic centre near Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt.

The Accorhotels Group has some very reasonable prices, if you%26#39;re lucky special offers are still available:

My recommendations are Mercure Hotel Muenchen (3 star) Altstadt, very near Marienplatz (but please beware, there’s some major building activity right opposite it now):

and the Novotel Muenchen City (4 star) which is also very nice and only 15 minutes on foot or 2 stops (5 minutes) away from the historic centre:

Both hotels I recommended above are located at airport stops (Marienplatz, Rosenheimer Platz).

Don%26#39;t forget to stroll over the Viktualienmarkt (open Mo-Fr 7-18; Saturday 7-15, S-Bahn stop Marienplatz) and eat some goodies.

On Sunday everything in Munich except museums and cafés will be closed, so if museums are your thing you could visit the Pinakotheken (one for classic art, one for 20th century and one for modern art). Sunday admission is only 1€ to each.

nearest metro station: Königsplatz or Odeonsplatz, or take the S-bahn 3 stops to Karlsplatz, then change to the tram no. 27 in the direction %26quot;Petuelring%26quot; and get off at stop %26quot;Alte Pinakothek%26quot;. All the Pinakotheken are next to each other.

Or you could take a trip to one of King Ludwig%26#39;s castles. Herrenchiemsee (located on an island in lake Chiemsee) is a copy of Versailles and Neuschwanstein is the famous fairy tale castle.

Visiting both in one day is not possible. Just put in Herrenchiemsee or Neuschwanstein in the search box for this forum and you%26#39;ll get loads of information on how to get there.

That%26#39;s brilliant - thank you very much. Panda74.

I will check your recommendations soon.

Both S-Bahn and bus take about the same time, 45 minutes, but the bus only has 2 stops, one in the north and at the central train station. I prefer the train because its more spacious and convenient, and another down side of the bus is that if you%26#39;re unlucky and there%26#39;s congestion on the motorway you could start your trip being stuck in traffic.

Thanks again Panda. Thought the S-Bahn would be the better choice.

Have been checking out your hotel recommendations - unfortunately the Novotel is unavailable for my dates. Still looking at the Mercure.

Thanks again

Ian
