Visit in late November

Hello,

We are travelling to the Black Forest and surrounding area during the latter half of November. We are thinking about exploring some of the sights including the Christmas markets (we%26#39;ve looked at market opening dates) in the region by car. We%26#39;re hoping some experts can give us guidance about which towns to see and stay in. Would you favor the smaller towns or larger citiies like Heidelberg and Freiburg? We will end our trip in Frankfurt.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sorry to say : November is not the perfect season to explore the Black Forest .

Weather could be cool and rainy . Therefore I suggest to visit the larger cities Freiburg and Heidelberg .

By the way : Heidelberg is not in the Black Forest .

You should also consider Strassbourg and Colmar in France , very romantic old towns and close to the Black Forest.

Most Christmas markets in smaller towns don%26#39;t start before December.

here same Christmas market starts

in Freiburg : November 23,

in Heidelberg , Offenburg , Colmar : November 25

in Karlsruhe : November 26

in Strassbourg : November 29

Although late Nov. is not peak season weather-wise, if you want to go there, don%26#39;t let that discourage you. I have been there in Nov.and in Dec., and the weather varies. It can be sunny or cloudy or rainy or light snowy or wet snowy or all, but it still has the Black Forset atmosphere. Anyway sometimes walking in the rain or snow in the forest is a nice experience.

I do recommend Heidelberg, and also Freiburg. Heidelberg is a Baroque university town, Freiburg a medieva-ish university town. They both attract tourists, but have a nice atmsophere. Hedielberg is a bit more popular. The also have Christmas markts.

If you are in the area,I also recommend Baden-Baden, a lovely spa town.

And I esp. recommend Strasbourg France inthe Alsace and just right across the Rhine, so you can get a taste (literally - great food, wine, beer) of France.

Gengenbach is a beautiful small medieval town with an atmospheric christmas market:

By far the best and most atmospheric christmas markets hereabouts are to be found in the Alsace region, e.g. in Colmar and the villages along the wine route:

Thank you for your ideas. We live in Minnesota in the U.S. so are used to cooler, winter weather! We plan to visit Strasbourg and Colmar. Have you ever stayed on a farm in this region or in the Black Forest area? We would like to try the experience of visiting a family on their farm. If you have any suggestions about places to stay, we welcome any thoughts! Thank you for your help.
