Night train reservations in winter

Hi

My husband and I will be making the following trips on night train December 2009:

Amsterdam to Berlin on 4 Dec in a double sleeper cabin

Berlin to Krakow on 6 Dec in a double sleeper cabin

Krakow to Vienna on 8 Dec in a double sleeper cabin

Munich to Venice on 12 Dec in a double sleeper cabin

He had a back operation a few years ago and would not be able to travel via seat or couchette reservation. I have been unable to find an online system that will allow night train bookings with eurail pass discount. I have checked railplus.com.au and raileurope.com.au, but the prices quoted online versus the eventual confirmed price is almost double (243 per couple online, 661 confirmed per couple).

Are there any issues in terms of availability if we just book the night train cabins ionce we get to Europe?

Most international routes are not easy to buy online directly. You can either submit a request at the site of the railway authority of the country you start the trip, and wait for a quote; or you can call them, but need to make sure you call during THEIR business hours, and hope there will be an english-speaker.

The availability of sleepers in night trains can be tricky especially around weekends or major holidays, as there are usually not a lot of berths per train.

Are you sure it makes sense for you to use an Eurail pass?

not that I%26#39;m an expert but have just succesfully booked thru www.bahn.de for Muc/Vce on 10Dec Had trouble on the web site but ended up calling them and their reservations dept. was great - excellent english and confirmed the booking and the price. worth the cost of a call from Oz.

Good luck.
