Neuschwanstein

Do I really need to book a tour to visit this castle? Or is there a train that can take me directly there? I don%26#39;t want to be stuck somewhere in the dark at night! We are going during the start of Oktoberfest, so I am concerned it will be busy. Thanks!

You can get there quite easily on your own, on the train and then bus to Hohenschwangau. You might want to reserve your ticket on-line to tour the inside of the castle - I don%26#39;t know how busy it is during Oktoberfest. But getting there and back is really simple on your own.

I would consider staying a few nights there instead of day tripping. Heaps to see and do in the area and the town and castles are brilliant before the daytrippers arrive and after they%26#39;ve left.

cheers

You can only see the inside of the castle on a guided tour. But you can walk around the village and castle grounds for free. The castles/palace%26#39;s website has a lot of good information on it.

You can easily take the Bahn from Munich to Fussen and catch the bus/shuttle out to the castles on your own. The Bahn%26#39;s website is excellent for trip planning. You can even print out the train/bus schedule so you won%26#39;t get stuck in the village of Hohenschwangau or Fussen. If you do this I would recommend buying the Bayern Ticket.

As a side note, Neuschwanstein is the most popular tourist destination in Germany, for Germans and non-Germans alike. It%26#39;s always crowded.

I am also planning to visit the castel. I have a few queries,

1. I read that one needs to take the train upto Fussen and thereafter a bus, on DB site i see that the one way travel time is 3.5-4 hrs with a few stop overs and the cost is Euro 60 per head. Is there a cheaper or faster way to travel between Munich and Neuschwanstein.

2. How about the drive, is that area safe to drive? As it will turn out a lot cheaper to me that way. How much is the driving time from Munich to Neuschwanstein and what is the distance.

3. How much time one should keep to spend at the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Thanks a lot in advance

Note, that Neuschwanstein is by Füssen or Fuessen, not Fussen as TripAdvisor spells it. Use the correct spelling on www.bahn.de after changing it to English near the top of the page, better yet, use your actual destination Hohenschwangau where the palace actually is, and you will see the different means of public transportation needed to reach there. All travel (regional trains and buses, trams, U-bahns and S-bahns) between anywhere in Munich to Neuschwanstein can be done using a Bavaria (Bayern) day ticket for 19€ single, or 29€ for a group of up to 5 people, you%26#39;ll not find a cheaper way to travel there. One real restriction, no travel on weekdays before 9AM using this ticket.

Hi,

I have just visited the castle on last month which it%26#39;s too easy and not expensive.

You just buy the bayern ticket from machine which cost will be cheaper than window counter 2 EUR and cost around 28 EUR and can travel up to 5 people.

You can check the platform, time, stop station on DB web which bayern ticket is not covered IC/EC,ICE or Railjet.

Moreover, bayern ticket is cover bus from Fussen to the castle also.

So you can go one day trip to the castle and buy the ticket with audio tour for 9 EUR per castle and 17 EUR for 2 castle.

Have a nice trip.

We have just returned from Munich and booked a tour online to visit Linderhof, Neuschwanstein and Oberammagau. We boarded the bus at the central station. To be honest, I am so glad we did this tour as we were able to sit back on the coach and enjoy the beautiful scenery as we travelled. We sat on the upper deck on the coach and were able to take some fabulous photos as we travelled of the mountains, Alpine pastures and the beautiful buildings. I was wary of doing this tour but our wonderful guide who was so informative made the whole trip an absolute joy. I can honestly say that this is the best trip I have ever done in my life and even my two teens (who were not looking forward to their day) said it was %26#39;totally cool!%26#39;.We were lucky as we had a beautiful warm cloudless day. The only downside is that we had a limited amount of time in Oberammagau, but I am just being picky.

Hi,

Hww much is the tour and is there a website?

|||

We booked this tour in the train staion at Eur Aid, it is mentioned in rick Steves book. It was 42 euro and included the bus and the three stops. We left at 8:15 in the morning got back around 6:30 pm. The addtional cost of 15 euro was for the entrance to both castles. I would say it made the day easy and enjoyable.

SGreefy, Im not sure if I am allowed to post commercial links on here, but I always use the Viator website. Simply put the words Viator and Munich into google and it will appear. There is an offer on at the moment. It is £35.98 (£10 less than we paid) and it is worth every penny. We booked on line and printed the vouchers before we travelled. What an amazing trip it was!
