Castles and old knees.......do able???

One of our group has trouble with his knees. While he kept up admirably on our trip to Italy this spring I could tell it bothered him. We are planning to do the Hohenschwangau castles in spring %26#39;10. I saw one comment about a large number of steps in Neuschwanstein. Can anyone tell me if they are spread thru out the tour.....what might the longest stretch of steps be?

How steep is the walk from the bridge above the castle? (Going down hill is painful).

Any other knee sufferers have comments to offer?

Thanks in advance

Did this trip in July of this year. I get Synvis injections in my knee and before the trip got a cortisone injection.

Take the bus up. This will drop you near the bridge which is a further up hill walk. It is also a further downhill walk to Neuschwanstein but not too bad.

Yes, there are stairs in the castle but they are spread out.

DO NOT take the bus back since you will have to walk uphill to catch it.

Instead, walk downhill and catch the horse drawn carriage back.

I personally liked Linderhof Castle better. Neuschwanstein has a spectacular setting and it is worth while but Linderhof is the full package.

It was completed (Neuschwanstein was not), is full of gilt, velvet, Meissen porcelain and mirrors. The gardens, fountains, pavilions and the Venus grotto add to the experience. It%26#39;s also much easier on the knees.

Hi frank-n-pat,

Great advice from %26quot;nancycinti%26quot;. Just want ot %26quot;2nd%26quot; this. For Neuschwanstein, take the bus up and the carriage back down. I must warn you that the walk down is short but steep from the Marienbrucke to Neuschwanstein. My wife did it with a very bad foot, although we did go slowly. It is the best option as the walk from the parking lot up to the castle is pretty tough.

Hohenschwagau is much easier.

I also agree Linderhof%26#39;s interior is tops.

I%26#39;m not a knee-sufferer, but reverse the above advise as then you will minimize downhill walking.

Neuschwanstein Castle is below the bus stop and above the carriage stop.

Bus up.

Carriage down.
